Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes’ popular pothead characters, Jay and Silent Bob, are getting their own video game.
Fans of the marijuana dealers’ movies are in luck. “Jay and Silent Bob: Chronic Blunt Punch” launched a crowdfunding initiative Tuesday on Fig with a goal of $400,000. The game itself is a co-op side-scrolling brawler that lets you play as Jay or Silent Bob searching a mega-mall for their trapped pot customers.
Developed by Interabang Entertainment, “Jay and Silent Bob: Chronic Blunt Punch” uses a “conversation combat system” called the Convo Combo mode. The mode has the player throwing insults, like only the titular characters could, which change the dynamic of the enemy fights.
“People have asked me for years why I never made a Jay and Silent Bob video game,” said Smith. “Now I can tell them I was waiting for Justin Woodward from Interabang Entertainment and our own Elias to bring it together. Couldn’t be happier to hand our characters off to folks who know them as well as I do.”
Interabang’s Woodward said working on the character’s from Smith’s Askew-niverse is exciting because of how often he turned to the movies in his past.
“Kevin Smith’s films have long inspired our team,” said Woodward said. “During development for our first game, we’d take breaks to watch them back to back. The iconic characters, hilarious dialogue and sheer surrealism of the Askew-niverse got us through rough patches during development and life’s struggles. We kept coming back to thinking about how amazing it would be to see Jay and Silent Bob in a game like the ones we design, and we’re amazed that we have this opportunity now.”
Unlike crowdfunding sites like Kickstarter, using Fig allows backers different benefits. Aside from the standard backer rewards, Fig offers investment opportunities for projects from both accredited and unaccredited investors. Fans can share in the financial rewards of the game alongside Smith and Mewes.
“Jay and Silent Bob: Chronic Blunt Punch” releases on PS$, Xbox One and PC.
